Kaithal (Hindi: कैथल) (Punjabi: ਅੰਬਾਲਾ)
is a city and a municipal council in Kaithal district in the
Indian state of Haryana. Kaithal was previously a part of
the Karnal District and later, Kurukshetra District until 1
November, 1989, when it became the headquarters of the
Kaithal District of Haryana.
Geography
Kaithal is located at 29.8°N
76.38°E. It has an average
elevation of 220 metres (721
feet).
This city is situated on
National Highway NH 65,
connecting the state capital
Chandigarh to Hissar. Also, it's
connected through road network
to Delhi via Karnal, and Patiala
and Sangrur
in Punjab. It is connected by
Railways to Narwana in west and
Kurukshetra in East. Nearest
Airports are Chandigarh and
Delhi.
History
Historically, it was known as "Kapisthal"
(Abode of Kapi, another name of
Lord Hanuman), and it is said to
have been founded by the Great
Pandava Emperor, Yudhisthira of
Mahabharata, and is connected by
tradition with the Lord Hanuman,
and has temple dedicated to
Anjani the mother of Hanuman.
Timur stopped here in 1398,
before attacking Delhi, and
mentions that residents were
fire worshippers. Later the city
became a Muslim cultural centre,
under the rule of Delhi
Sultanate and even today tombs
of several Sufi saint, dating
13th century can be found in the
city, most important among them
is that of Sheikh Sala -ud-din
of Bhalkh (1246 CE). The town
was renovated and a fort was
built here during the rule of
Mughal Emperor, Akbar, and as
per Ain-i-Akbari, it was a
pargana, under the sarkar of
Sirhind, and had developed into
an agricultural centre
In 1767, it fell into the hands
of the Sikh chieftain, Bhai Desu
Singh, whose descendants, the
bhais of Kaithal, ranked among
the most powerful Cis-Sutlej
states. Their territories lapsed
to the British in 1843 and
became a municipality in 1867.
In 1901 it had a population of
14,408 and was tehsil in Karnal
district. There remain the fort
of the Bhais are still extant,
and their title
Bhai became common with main
Sikh rulers.
Razia Sultana, the first woman
ruler of India, who reign as the
Sultana of Delhi Sultanate from
1236 to 1240, she fled Delhi
with Malik Altúniya, after they
were defeated on 24th of Rabí'u-l
awwal A.H. 638 (Oct. 1240), and
reached Kaithal the next day,
where their remaining forces
abandoned them, and they both
fell into the hands of the
Hindus and were killed . This
aspect is still not very
commonly known to many, but
residents of kaithal know about
the mazaar of Razia Begum since
generations.
Demographics
As of 2001 India census, Kaithal
had a population of 117,226.
Males constitute 54% of the
population and females 46%.
Kaithal has an average literacy
rate of 65%, higher than the
national average of 59.5%: male
literacy is 70%, and female
literacy is 58%. In Kaithal, 14%
of the population is under 6
years of age. There is a large
Sikh population because Kaithal
is adjoining Punjab.
