Sonipat / सोनीपत

Sonipat (Punjabi: ਸੋਨੀਪਤ, سونیپت; Hindi: सोनीपत) Also spelled as Sonepat, is an ancient town and a municipal council in Sonipat District in the state of Haryana, India. It is believed that it was founded as Suvarnaprastha by the five Pandava brothers during the times of Mahabharata. Another legend ascribed it to Raja Soni, the thirteenth descendent of Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers.

Geography
Sonipat is located at 28.98°N 77.02°E.It has an average elevation of 220 metres (721 feet)

Demographics
As of 2001 India census, Sonipat had a population of 216,213. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Sonipat has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 66%.

Legend
Most of the people living in Sonipat believe that this land is sinful, but still every one loves it who so ever lived here.
The reason why this land is believed to be sinful is that local people who have lived on this land for generation tell the story of Shravan Kumar, a boy who took his blind parents on his shoulder for pilgrimage. When he reached Bahalgarh near Sonipat, he asked his parents to pay for the services he provided, by taking them on pilgrimage.
It is also believed to be the ancient Swarnaprastha, one of 5 villages Pandavas asked for settlement in Mahabharat to forfeit their claims to the crown of Hastinapur.

Places of Interest

• Yamuna River: The river flows besides the rural belt of the city with its holy waters which turn into a Black Nullah after entering the National Capital Delhi.
  This acts as a natural boundary also between state of Haryana and the state of Uttar Pradesh.

• Mughal Buildings: At the outskirts of the city one can enjoy the site of Mughal Buildings which lie unprotected.

• Atlas Cycle Factory:
  When the car company Maruti was less well known, more than 95% of India's vehicle-owning population owned a bicycle. It was at this time that Sonipat was the home of one of the biggest cycle manufacturer - Atlas cycle.

• Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology
  Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University Of Science and Technology is situated at the Sonepat-Murthal road is the only University in the field of Science & Technology in Haryana. Earlier, it was known as Chhotu Ram State College of Engineering. It is spread over 274 acres of land and is in very congenial rural environmental setting providing for an ideal place for attaining excellence in Education and Research.It offers Undergraduate programmes in Applied Sciences, Architecture, Bio-Medical Engineering, Bio-technology, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Business Management, English Communication, M.SC. in all Subject etc. The university proposes to set up Centre of Excellence in the fields of Highway Safety, Estate Management, Energy Studies, Community Development and Business Incubation. Besides the Undergraduate Programmes Post Graduate Programmes are available in most of the Subjects.

• Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyalaya (BPSMV)
  This is the First university for Woman in North India situated at Khanpur Kalan, Sonepat. The University has 185 acres existing campus and there is a proposal to acquire 450 acres of more land. It promises a world class infrastructure in the University. The proposed direct road connectivity with the National Highway no.1 (Sher Shah Suri Marg / GT Road) will substantially reduce its distance from Delhi. The University has various Institutions running, a Central Library, hostels for the students and Faculty houses for the Lecturers. New Institutions and Teaching blocks for the existing and proposed new courses with the latest infrastructure, hostels, modern Faculty Houses and Staff Houses are coming up fast. Apart from this, a new Central Library with all the modern facilities, Auditoriums for co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and indoor and outdoor stadiums for sports activities are proposed in the next phase of construction which will cater to the demands of about 10000 students. In addition to all this, realizing the importance of Computer Literacy in the Modern scenario of today, the University will start Computer Training Programmes for all its students from the coming Academic Session.
  About five thousand students, already enrolled, with the various colleges of the university are getting education and training in professional courses like BAMS, B. Ed, D. Ed, Diploma in Electronics and Communication, Computer Engineering, Pharmacy, Library and Information Science, MLT, IT and Modern Office Practice. Five year and three year LLB courses are imparted at PSD Girls Law College. • S.M.Hindu Sr. Sec. School:
  
  S. M. Hindu Senior Secondary School is a well-known school in North, India. • Hindu Kanya Senior Secondary School:
  Hindu Kanya Senior Secondary School is a well-reputed school situated near Railway Station, Sonepat (Haryana), affiliated to the Haryana Board, Bhiwani. • Hindu Vidyapeeth:
  Hindu Vidyapeeth is situated at Kath Mandi, Sonepat, the scchool is affiliated to Central Board of School Education (CBSE) New Delhi. The school prepares the students for AISSE conducted by CBSE. There is a common course for all the students up to X standard. In 10 + 2, the students have two streams i.e science and commerce.

• DAV Multi Purpose Public School:
  It is located in Sector - 15 of Sonipat. It was established in the year 1985. It is managed by DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi, which is one of India's largest non-government, not-for-profit educational group running more than 1000 schools and colleges across India. • Malviya Shiksha Sadan:
  Malviya Shiksha Sadan was started in 1975 in the memory Pandit Madan Mohan Malviyaw with a view to meet the pressing educational needs of Sonepat, a rapidly developing town. Initially this school started it's functioning in hostel of Hindu College Presently the hostel of Hindu Sen. Sec. School court road. After two year it was shifted to its present place, Dr. Mangal Sain the minister of Home in Haryana Govt. was a close associate of B. Dwarka Nath Ji provided land on Concessional rate to this institute. It was a waste land and totally uneven. In 1976 classes were arrange in tent ages, Day & Night untiring toil of B.Dwarka Nath, his nature soft spoken behaviour, dedication to the cause of education, change the whole situation.
  The school imparts quality education thus enabling the children to meet new challenges and fulfill the aspiration to a fast developing and changing society. Now it has been taken of by the Hindu Education & Charitable Society of Sonepat. In nutshell it is the whole creation of B.Dwarka Nath who has contributed a lot toward the cause of education and particularly he devoted his 32 years whole heartedly to developed construct this Huge Building, Auditorium, Hostel, Labs, C.R, & Library.

• Hindu Sr. Sec. School:
  The Hindu Senior Secondary School, New Court Road, Sonepat, was founded in 1989 as Hindu High School and had classes from VI to X only. It was recognized by the Education Department of the state and affiliated to the Haryana Board of School Education, Bhiwani. Right from the beginning, it rose from strength to strength.
  The Management thought it wise to get it affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi and raise its status from High School (Secondary School) to Senior Secondary School. Finally, it became a full-fledged SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL in 1997 with all three disciplines, i.e. Humanities, Commerce and Science (Medical and Non Medical). Since then, it has made rapid progress and carved out a niche for itself among the good schools of the state, affiliated to the C.B.S.E.

• Shambhu Dayal Modern School:
  It is situated on Gohana Road, established in 1975 and affiliated to CBSE. It is also the oldest school in Sonipat which is affiliated to CBSE. This school started by a single man Mr. S.K. Sharma, who was the Headmaster and later on the Principal of this school for a long time. This great man has left the neighbouring SM Hindu Sr. Sec. School that time as teacher with a challenge to build an equal respectable school in the neighbourhood. With his dreams the farmers from village Garhi Brahmnan donated the land to this noble cause and people both from city and villages donated money to build the school building. The school has an Shiva Temple and Stadium. Now the school has many branches as boys, girls wings, senior, junior schools etc. The school started classes in 1975 in tents and slowly picked up the pace and presently it is one of the great education institutions in the city. Mr. S.K. Sharma later left this school and opened his own school named Rishikul Vidyapeeth.

• Rishikul Vidyapeeth:
   It is situated on Gohana Road (RV1) and on Devru Road RV2, affiliated to CBSE. One of the most disciplined & productive Day/Boarding School. It has a magnificent campus (a must visit).

• Motilal Nehru School Of Sports, Rai:
  The Motilal Nehru School of Sports, Rai was founded in July 1973 by the Government of Haryana with the prime objective to provide excellent education facilities with extra emphasis on sports to deserving students. The school is organized on the Public School pattern. It is fully residential & co-educational. The School is a member of the Indian Public Schools Conference. The School is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education for the Secondary (Class X) and Senior Secondary (Class XII) Examinations. University, Rohtak. The Institute is located just opposite the Sonepat Railway Station and is also close to the Bus Stand. This makes the Institute easily accessible from Delhi and nearby towns.
